Waverley crash inquest: Driver had smoked synthetic cannabis before crash


An examination into the circumstances behind the deaths of seven people in one of the worst crashes in recent history is underway.

The inquest considering the cause of the multi-fatality crash on State Highway 3, near Waverley, South Taranaki on June 27, 2018, began at 10am Friday in the Whanganui District Court.

Ian Porteous, 80, his wife Rosalie Porteous, 76, his sister Ora Keene, 84, and the trio’s friend Brenda Williams,79, all of Waverley, died at the scene along with the driver of the other car, 28-year-old Jeremy Thompson and his five-month-old baby girl Shady-Jade Thompson.

Nivek Madams, 8, died in the early hours of June 28, 2018 at Waikato hospital. Nivek and Shady-Jade’s mother, Ani Nohinohi, who was also Thompson’s partner of four years, survived the crash and was taken to hospital in a critical condition but had since recovered.
