National party says leaked document shows cannabis referendum won’t be binding

A binding cannabis referendum has been thrown into question by the supposed leak of a Cabinet document.

National party drug reform spokeswoman Paula Bennett says a cabinet paper on an anticipated cannabis referendum has been leaked to the party revealing the Government as ill-prepared.

A binding referendum on personal cannabis use has been promised for the 2020 general election, and Justice Minister Andrew Little says this still stands.

But according to National – which declined to release the paper – only one of the four referendum options due to be discussed by Cabinet on Monday would possibly compel the Government to act on a outcome.
