Police cannabis seizures up despite looming referendum on personal use

Police had a bumper haul of cannabis last year, taking more than $15 million worth off the streets despite a looming referendum on personal use.

Figures released to Stuff under the Official Information Act showed officers confiscated almost 800,000 grams of harvested weed in 2018, with a total street value of almost $15.5m.

That amount was bigger than seizures of harvested cannabis for the previous three years. The data released this week also shows hauls of cannabis oil, resin and seeds have increased since 2015, while the number of plants confiscated has been in decline.
