Getting Higher: Cannabis Offenses Rising in Japan


While stimulants are still the illegal drug that keeps Japan’s police busiest, cannabis usage is rising.
Japan’s police took action against 3,578 people related to cannabis offences in 2018. This is a year-on-year increase of 570, greatly surpassing the previous record set in 2017. The number of cannabis-related cases police handled also rose by 722, to 4,687 in total. Overall drug cases in Japan for the year involved 13,862 people.
