How does the AFL’s drug-testing policy work?

What is the AFL’s illicit drug policy? In 2004, Carlton players Laurence Angwin and Karl Norman arrived at training under the influence of the party drug ecstasy. Angwin was sacked. Norman was given a one-match ban but remained with the Blues until the end of 2005. The incident prompted the AFL to announce plans to formally test players year round (44 weeks) for illicit drug use, beginning in the 2005 season.
